This past Thursday, our district was ready to issue a complete shutdown of our new trucks. Postoffices in Torrance, and Livermore, had lifgates encounter a partial collapse. Pacific area safety managers were ready to issue a shutdown order, but some experimenting at the VMF, it was decided to tighten the chain links to see if this would help. Safety has also put out an order to the drivers, not to use the liftgates as a bridge link to the dock. Liftgates must only be used, where there is a dock, or some kind of surface below the liftgate. There also seems to be a problem with the extender plate, at the end of liftgate. There will be a safety issue with some of the offices using the scissor lifts, like Laguna Hills, because you have to extend the gates out, then put the scissor plate over the liftgate. The collapses seem to happen when you roll a otr, or other equipment onto the liftgate, there is a possibility of the gates folding up. I am sending some documents to national, to keep the directors informed of our safety issues. We are not the only ones having these problems. Leyman denies that there is a safety problems with their design. Please be careful when using the new trucks, and let me know if you encounter any new problems, asap. I believe in safety, and I will work with management, to make sure that we don't have any further issues with the trucks.
